THE PROJECT
The Small Orchestra of Peoples
A project dedicated to Marisa and Vittorio Baldoni
The Small Orchestra of Peoples is an artistic workshop that brings together musicians of different nationalities. It is an experience of possible coexistence between people belonging to different cultures and religions, born within the Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Foundation.
The Small Orchestra of Peoples is part of the Foundation's projects as an example of concrete testimony of the beauty of encountering the other, through musical harmony.
Although there is a historical nucleus of musicians, The Small Orchestra of Peoples is conceived not as a permanent staff, but as a structure open to collaboration with other musicians, depending on the particularity of the individual projects to which the Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Foundation gives life.
The musical repertoire, made up of original and traditional pieces, combines South American rhythms and Indian melodies through Mediterranean harmonies and Balkan sounds.
The concert of The Small Orchestra of Peoples for Pope Francis on the occasion of the ten years anniversary of the Foundation
The Small Orchestra of Peoples in concert with the "Violin of the Sea"
It is a concert/show in which the stage is occupied by a large sail and alludes to the only "boat of life" on which we are all, and by a rudder that rotates without any effect like a navigation without a guide.
The development of the show, inspired by the themes of Pope Francis’ encyclical Fratelli Tutti, includes musical pieces, dances, readings of texts and video projections.
A significant moment of the show is dedicated to the drama of emigration with the performance of pieces played on the “Violin of the Sea”, built with the wood of the boats of shipwrecked migrants or landed in Lampedusa (Find out more about the "Violin of the Sea”).
The staff that makes up the Small Peoples Orchestra
Renata Mezenov Sa - vocals, guitar (Cuba), Pietro Boscacci - violin (Italy), Sever "Persic" Iancu - accordion, guitar (Romania), Romeo Velluto - guitar (Italy), Ashanka Sen - sitar (India), Alessandra Capone - harp, voice (Italy), Raffaele Brancati - winds (Italy), Arup Kanti Das - tabla, voice (India), Kal Dos Santos - percussion (Brazil), Neslihan Yilmazel - voice, davul, dance (Turkey).
Artistic direction: Ciro Menale.
The work, entitled “I Musicanti” (The Musicians”), was donated by the artist Domenica Regazzoni to the Foundation. A work that represents with its poetry and its strength the meaning of the project of The Small Orchestra of Peoples.
PROJECTS IN PROGRESS
The Small Orchestras of Peoples’ Network was born within The Small Orchestra of Peoples project. The first initiative, which we wanted to testify the meaning of the project with, is entitled Canto Prossimo (“Close Song”)
A harmony of diversity: 5 orchestras from 5 continents were involved: SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN NEBEK (Syria), ORCHESTRA LES ROSSIGNOLS IN KANANGA (DR Congo), THE CAVI ORCHESTRA IN THE VILLA SOLDATI DISTRICT IN BUENOS AIRES (Argentina), THE QUEEN OF PARADISE PROJECT (Papua New Guinea) and in Italy, SANITANSAMBLE (Naples), with the common goal of creating a video with the reading, each in their own language, of the Prayer to the Creator which closes the Encyclical "Brothers all" of Pope Francis, on the notes of a single melody.

The Small Orchestra of Peoples enters the Milano-Opera prison with the “Metamorfosi” project
Within the "Metamorfosi” project, an action curated by The Small Orchestra of Peoples aimed at secondary schools and will take place inside the Milan Prison House - Opera in the "Piazza del Silenzio" (“Silence Square”), where 3 boats from Lampedusa have been positioned.
What the students will attend will not be a theatrical performance, but a story of knowledge that arises from the meeting between the orchestra and the participants.
The topic will be today immigration, but speaking of today means first of all speaking of yesterday, of Italian emigration of the early twentieth century and of how history repeats itself with its prejudices and clichés.
Mediterranean sounds will follow the scene to create atmospheres of distant places.
